Eligibility

The BSP is sufficiently flexible to accommodate students with a relatively wide range of backgrounds.  Students with a bachelor's degree in any of the biological, biochemical, engineering or physical sciences who have a strong desire to pursue research-oriented career are encouraged to apply.
The minimum requirements for admission to the Graduate College are:
  • A bachelor's degree from a Regionally Accredited American College of University, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions.
  • A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00/4.00, or the foreign equivalent as determined by the Office of Admissions.

GRE scores are not required for admission.

The application deadline for best consideration is December 1 for a start date of the following August.

Application review will not take place until all of the required documents here have been received by the Graduate Admissions Office.

Submit the Graduate Admissions Application. 

Once you have submitted your application, you will besent a HawkID and password to access your Admissions Profile on MyUI.

Upload your most recent resume or curriculum vitae (CV) to help us understand where you've been and what you've been able to accomplish.

Your research statement should be 1-2 pages in length and provide a narrative description of your most relevant research experience. Tell us about the project goals, lab and computational techniques utilized, and your specific role in the project(s).

Help us get to know you and your goals/motivations. Use this statement to share with us:

  • Why are you pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Science?
  • What challenges and opportunities have you encountered during your academic training and student life and how did you overcome them?
  • Why did you choose the Biomedical Science Program (BSP) for your graduate training?
  • Why are you interested in the University of Iowa?
  • What are your short- and long-term career goals?

Identify three (3) individuals that can tell us more about what you are like to work with and can help us understand what kind of student and professional you are. Ideally, these are individuals that can speak to your strengths and areas for improvement as well as your abilities and motivations as a graduate student and scientist.

If you are admitted, official transcripts will be required before your enrollment. For international records, all records should bear the original stamp or seal of the institution and the signature of a school official. Documents not in English must be accompanied by a complete, literal, English translation, certified by the issuing institution.

International applications may be asked to submit an English Proficiency Exam Score to comply with the University's English Language Proficiency Requirements. Review the Graduate Admissions website to learn more about requirements as well as to see if you qualify for a waiver.

$60 ($100 for international students), payable by Discover, MasterCard, or Visa.

Reimbursement: Applicants to the Biomedical Science Program will have the application fee reimbursed by the Carver College of Medicine if (1) The applicant receives an interview invitation, and (2) The applicant completes the interview.
